The "NPA" stands for National Programme of Action for Children in South Africa. It is a holistic programme - or plan of action - that works to promote and protect the rights of children in South Africa.
The NPA has been discussed and debated for years, by child rights advocates from non- governmental organizations (NGOs), members of governments, internation agencies, and members of civil society. On Children's Day - 6th November 1999 - the NPA will be launched and implemented. This means that the programme of action - made up of a number of activities - will begin, and the rights of South African children will be actively promoted and protected. The NPA: 2000 & Beyond will be co-ordinated by the Office on the Status of the Child in the Office of the Presidency (President TM Mbeki). However all sectors of society - including various governmental departments, NGOs, and the public at large - will be involved in the process and implementation of it.
