Since that day in Orlando Stadium in 1994, the government ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child on 16 June 1995. In 1996, the NPA was officially launched. Provincial Programmes of Action (PPAs) have been launched in several provinces, and Local Programmes of Action (LPAs) are being developed in some municipalities.
A group of NGOs and other essential organs of civil society helped give birth to the NPA process, and the handed it over to a democratic government for implementation. The government has approved a plan to take the NPA forward. This next phase will be co-ordinated by the Office on the Status of the Child in the Presidency.
